Week 12: Starting the Frontend
Week 12: Starting the Frontend
This week, we finally began working on the actual Dietary Inventory System (DIS) after all the planning. Since I’m still learning, Ma’am Ynah assigned me to help with the frontend.. At first, I was nervous because I’ve never built a system using Laravel before, but it turned out to be a great way to test and apply what I’ve learned during my breaks, learning the framework.
We used a simple drag-and-drop tool called Figma to design the screens, which made things easier to visualize when coding it later. My main task was creating the layout for the inventory and delivery module, where staffs and admin can log food supplies and create delivery orders. I kept thinking back to the HOMIS+ manual I worked on and how confusing some parts were. That helped me design clearer labels and buttons so users wouldn’t get stuck.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Sometimes, I’d spend way too long adjusting tiny details, like making sure all the text boxes lined up perfectly. Ma’am Ynah had to remind me that functionality matters more than making it look “pretty.” Other times, I’d suggest something I thought was clever, only to realize it wouldn’t work for how the staff actually do things. It was a good lesson in balancing my ideas with real user needs.
Between working on the system, I still handled the usual helpdesk tickets. It was funny switching between building a new system and then going back to fixing someone’s printer issue. But it also kept me grounded, no matter how cool our new system is, people will still need help with the basics.
By the end of the week, we had a rough wireframe of the main screen done. It’s far from finished, but seeing something I helped create start to take shape felt really satisfying. I’m excited to keep improving it, even if I still have a lot to learn. And who knows? Maybe soon, the dietary staffs will be using something I helped build!
